MEMS is home to a state-of-the-art emergency communications center that staffs certified Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD). The necessary information is obtained by the EMD so that the ambulance...
can be immediately dispatched. The EMD then continues speaking with the caller to provide the necessary medical and safety instructions and support for the caller to render aid prior to the responding paramedic crews’ arrival. MEMS routinely receives medical 911 calls from eleven different central Arkansas primary Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs)
Tips for calling 911:
- Stay as calm and controlled as possible. It's important to stay as calm as you can so that you can be helped or help the one you are calling for. The 911 dispatcher will try to move things along quickly and under control so that they can provide you potentially life-saving instruction.
- Know the location of the emergency and the number you are calling from. This may be asked and answered a couple of times, but don't get frustrated. To be sure paramedics get to the right place in the shortest amount of time possible, 911 dispatchers must verify and confirm the information that you provide. That way, if for some reason you are disconnected, emergency crews will know where to go and how to call you back.
- Wait for the 911 dispatcher to ask questions and answer them clearly. Remember that the paramedics are already being sent to you while you are still on the line.
- Follow all directions. In most cases, the 911 dispatcher will give you specific instructions. Listen carefully, follow each step exactly, and ask for clarification if you don't understand.
- Do not hang up until directed to do so by the 911 dispatcher.
