MEMS enters Purple Status ahead of Winter Storm

Metropolitan EMS is transitioning into winter weather operations, known internally as Purple Status, in advance of an approaching winter storm expected to impact the Little Rock metro area and surrounding communities.

Preparations began earlier this week as forecasts indicated the potential for snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions. MEMS will move to Purple Status on Friday afternoon as the winter weather moves closer to the metro.

Multiple departments across the organization are working behind the scenes to ensure uninterrupted emergency medical response throughout the weather event.

Fleet Maintenance teams are completing preventative vehicle maintenance and equipping ambulances with studded tires to improve traction on icy roadways. Supply Technicians are ensuring all ambulances and stations are fully stocked with medical supplies and essential equipment. The Training Division is coordinating meal support to sustain crews who may remain on duty for extended periods.
MEMS’ Special Operations Response Team (SORT) has confirmed all specialized equipment is fueled, packed, and ready to assist field crews as needed. Additionally, Disaster Communications personnel are preparing auxiliary radio equipment, including portable repeaters, to maintain communication capabilities should ice impact AWIN or UHF radio systems.

MEMS urges the public to avoid unnecessary travel once winter weather begins. Residents should remain off roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary, allowing Arkansas Department of Transportation, city, and county crews time to clear and treat roads.

MEMS crews will remain fully operational and ready to respond to emergencies throughout the storm.

The MEMS team is prepared, there’s sNOw need to worry.
